Karen graduated from OHSU with a BS in Nursing, from Case Western Reserve with a MS in Nursing and Nurse Practitioner in Midwifery. She is currently working for Roseburg Women's Health Care as a Nurse Practitioner. 

Karen is a third generation rancher in north Douglas County. She and her husband, Clay Baumartner, run a 650 acre ranch, mixed forest, and grazing land. The ranch provides the headwaters of local fish bearing streams. Approximately 40 acres of the ranch has been placed in CREP, to protect those riparian areas. 

They have two grown children and a 10 year old son. They are involved as volunteers on local boards and with local civic groups.
